In a remarkable display of eloquence and critical thinking, St. John Vianney Science College, Ukwulu, Anambra State, has emerged as the grand champion of the inaugural UK-Nigeria Debate Competition. The virtual event, held on June 19, 2025, brought together top secondary schools from Nigeria and the United Kingdom in a fierce contest of ideas and oratory skills.
The competition featured four Nigerian schools—Britarch Schools, Abuja; Sure Start School, Abuja; St. Augustine’s College, Jos; and St. John Vianney Science College, Ukwulu—alongside prominent UK institutions including Central Foundation Girls’ School, Maghull High School, and Shireland High School.
After intense preliminary rounds, St. John Vianney Science College advanced to the finals by decisively defeating British teams from Maghull High School and Central Foundation Girls’ School. The final round was an all-Nigerian affair, pitting St. John Vianney against St. Augustine’s College, Jos. In a closely contested debate, St. John Vianney Science College secured a commanding victory, earning the prestigious title of Inaugural UK-Nigeria Debate Champions.
This landmark achievement not only highlights the exceptional talent nurtured within Nigerian secondary schools but also strengthens educational and cultural ties between Nigeria and the United Kingdom. Organizers have praised the high standard of debate and expressed optimism about making this competition an annual event to foster youth engagement and international dialogue.
