A 36-year-old Nigerian man, Emmanuel Onwubiko, who was in the UK on a student visa, has been sentenced to two years in jail for molesting a 17-year-old colleague at a psychiatric home. Onwubiko reportedly told his victim that such acts were “normal in Nigeria” and that “Nigerian girls don’t report.”
The court heard that Onwubiko had been harassing the teenager for some time. Incidents included grabbing her from behind, squeezing her breasts, and holding her buttocks while she was dressing a bed.
The final and most aggressive incident occurred when he pinned her to a wall, aggressively rubbed her thighs, and grabbed her vagina. This prompted the victim to report the abuse to an elderly woman, who then informed the police.
The victim underwent a water baptism to seek cleansing, as the ordeal significantly impacted her physically and psychologically. Despite the victim’s distress and detailed account, Onwubiko continued to deny the allegations.
During the court proceedings, the victim’s father reportedly attacked Emmanuel Onwubiko in court, resulting in injuries including a nosebleed, two chipped teeth, and a subdural hemorrhage.
Onwubiko’s lawyer pleaded for leniency, citing that he has a wife and three children in Nigeria. However, the judge refused the plea, emphasizing the severity of the crime and stating that Onwubiko will be a registered sex offender for 10 years.
Onwubiko, who was pursuing a Masters in Education Arts, now faces a two-year prison sentence.
