Tehran, Iran – The Middle East plunged into a new era of open conflict today as Israel launched unprecedented, widespread strikes against Iran’s nuclear program and military leadership, drawing immediate retaliation from Tehran. The audacious Israeli operation, dubbed “Operation Rising Lion,” saw 200 fighter jets unleash over 330 munitions on more than 100 targets across Iran, marking the most significant attack on the Islamic Republic since its war with Iraq in the 1980s.

The strikes proved deadly, with Iranian state media confirming the deaths of several high-ranking military officials and nuclear scientists. Among those killed are General Hossein Salami, the powerful commander-in-chief of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, and Major General Mohammad Bagheri, Iran’s highest-ranking military officer. Additionally, six nuclear scientists, including Fereydoun Abbasi, the former head of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization, and Mohammad Mehdi Tehranchi, a prominent physicist, were reported killed. Ali Shamkhani, Iran’s former national security chief and a close aide to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was also confirmed dead.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that “Operation Rising Lion” targeted Iran’s main enrichment facility in Natanz, nuclear scientists, and the heart of Iran’s ballistic missile program. While the UN nuclear watchdog, the IAEA, confirmed the Natanz nuclear site was hit, it reported no immediate rise in radiation levels.

In a swift response, Iran launched over 100 drones towards Israeli territory, according to the Israeli military. The IDF has begun intercepting these drones outside of Israeli airspace, with an official stating, “This is a different event to what we’ve experienced thus far, and we’re expecting difficult hours.” Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has vowed a “harsh response” and warned Israel of a “bitter and painful fate.”

The escalating crisis has sent shockwaves across the globe. Emirates airline has canceled flights to and from Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, and Iran for Friday and Saturday. Both Israel and Iran, along with Jordan, have closed their airspaces, effectively emptying the skies over the region.

The United States, through Secretary of State Marco Rubio, quickly distanced itself from the Israeli strikes, stating there was no US involvement or assistance. However, Iran’s foreign ministry accused Washington of aiding Israel and holding the US responsible for the consequences. Before the attack, President Donald Trump had reportedly expressed a desire for Israel not to target Iran as US negotiations on a nuclear deal continued.

International reactions have been swift and largely condemnatory of the escalation. Saudi Arabia expressed “strong condemnation and denunciation,” while China urged its citizens in Iran to exercise caution. The UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the “military escalation” and urged both sides to exercise “maximum restraint.” Other nations, including Australia, New Zealand, and Britain, have voiced alarm and called for de-escalation and a return to diplomacy.

Israel has declared a state of emergency, closing schools, banning social gatherings, and advising against non-essential work. Israeli hospitals have been ordered to halt outpatient and non-urgent activities and move to protected areas, and the Israeli military is calling up “tens of thousands” of soldiers.

The strikes on Iran’s hardened nuclear facilities pose a significant challenge. Military experts note that many of Iran’s nuclear structures are built with specialized, hardened concrete and some are buried deep underground, making them difficult to destroy comprehensively. The full impact of the strikes and the scale of Iran’s promised retaliation remain to be seen, leaving the Middle East bracing for a potentially prolonged and devastating conflict.
