Veteran Actor Jibola Dabo Clarifies Relationship History with Binta Ayo Mogaji: “We Were Never Married”

Veteran Nollywood actor Jibola Dabo has addressed longstanding rumors about his relationship with colleague Binta Ayo Mogaji, emphatically stating that the pair were never legally married despite having a child together. In an exclusive interview, Dabo revealed new details about their 2000s-era romance, the challenges of maintaining a transatlantic relationship, and their current co-parenting dynamic.

Background of the Relationship

Early Romance and Transatlantic Challenges

Dabo confirmed that he and Mogaji began dating in the early 2000s but emphasized that their relationship faced insurmountable logistical and cultural hurdles after he relocated to the United States for academic pursuits. “Communication became nearly impossible in those pre-smartphone days,” Dabo explained. “I was pursuing my Master’s in Mass Media at Columbia State University, while Binta’s career kept her rooted in Nigeria.”

The actor described their split as an amicable but inevitable consequence of diverging lifestyles: “We respected each other’s paths, but the Atlantic Ocean might as well have been a universe apart back then.”

Pregnancy and Mature Resolution

When Mogaji became pregnant in her late 30s, both actors approached the situation with deliberate care. “Binta was 39 at the time – neither of us considered termination an option,” Dabo stated. Medical complications arose when the pregnancy was discovered to be ectopic, requiring emergency surgery that removed one of Mogaji’s fallopian tubes. Against odds, she later conceived naturally and delivered their son six weeks after turning 40.

Co-Parenting and Current Dynamics

United Front at Graduation Ceremony

Recent public appearances, including their son Fareed Ademide Mogaji’s 2024 graduation from Lead City University, Ibadan, demonstrate the actors’ commitment to cooperative parenting. Both shared celebratory social media posts, with Dabo expressing gratitude for those who joined them in marking the milestone.

Mogaji’s Previous Statements

Mogaji had previously clarified the nature of their relationship in multiple interviews, stating: “Jibola was only my boyfriend, though we had a baby together before I got married to my husband, Dr. Victor Ayodele Oduleye”. She acknowledged Dabo’s presence at their son’s graduation as evidence of matured understanding between them.

Addressing Marriage Speculations

Cultural Context of Rumors

The persistent marriage rumors likely stemmed from Nigeria’s cultural tendency to assume formal unions between co-parenting celebrities. Dabo addressed this directly: “In our society, people struggle to comprehend that two mature adults can raise a child without legal matrimony. We’ve always prioritized our son’s wellbeing over societal expectations.”

Current Family Status

While Mogaji married British psychotherapist Dr. Oduleye, Dabo revealed he later wed a Black American woman with Native American heritage. “My wife understands the complexities of cross-cultural relationships,” he noted, emphasizing that both families maintain cordial relations for their son’s benefit.

Medical and Social Context

Ectopic Pregnancy Revelations

Mogaji’s 2024 interview details the life-threatening complications she faced during the ectopic pregnancy. Surgeons removed one fallopian tube during a nine-hour operation, with colleagues including Jide Kosoko and Sam Loco keeping vigil at the hospital. Her subsequent natural conception defied medical expectations, a fact she attributes to divine intervention.

Shifting Societal Norms

The actors’ experience reflects evolving attitudes toward non-traditional family structures in Nigeria. Relationship coach Adesuwa Onyenokwe observed: “Their story demonstrates that mutual respect and child-focused cooperation can outweigh rigid adherence to marital conventions.”

Career Impacts and Legacy

Professional Trajectories

Neither actor allowed personal developments to derail their careers. Dabo continued building his filmography with projects like Dirty Secrets (2009), while Mogaji solidified her status as a Yoruba cinema icon through roles like Igbanladogi.

Industry Reactions

Colleagues have praised their discretion. Actor Jide Kosoko remarked: “They handled private matters professionally – a model for younger stars navigating public scrutiny.”

A Modern Parenting Paradigm

Dabo and Mogaji’s story offers a nuanced perspective on relationships, parenting, and cultural expectations in contemporary Nigeria. As Mogaji stated in a recent podcast: “Family isn’t defined by certificates but by commitment to a child’s future”. Their ability to collaborate across continents and marriages suggests a blueprint for cooperative parenting in an increasingly globalized society.

This clarification comes as Nollywood undergoes broader conversations about privacy, with veteran actor Richard Mofe-Damijo recently advocating for clearer boundaries between artists’ personal and professional lives. As audiences continue seeking authentic storytelling, Dabo and Mogaji’s transparency adds depth to public understanding of celebrity experiences.
