Iroko, Oyo State – The ancient town of Iroko in Akinyele Local Government Area of Oyo State has been plunged into mourning following the passing of its revered monarch, the Oniroko of Iroko, Oba Sunmaila Olasunkanmi Abioye Opeola (Kurunloju 1). The traditional ruler, a symbol of unity and progress, “joined his ancestors” in the early hours of Friday, May 30, 2025.
The somber news was officially confirmed by Prince Dolapo Abioye, who issued a statement on behalf of the Opeola-Oniroko family. The statement detailed that Oba Opeola’s reign was marked by his unwavering dedication to the service of his people, the preservation of Iroko’s rich customs, and the relentless pursuit of development within the community, Akinyele Local Government, and indeed, Oyo State as a whole.
According to Prince Abioye, the late monarch’s body is scheduled for burial today, Saturday, June 1, 2025, at 10:00 AM. Further details regarding the burial rites are expected to be announced by the family.
Oba Sunmaila Olasunkanmi Abioye Opeola’s passing leaves a significant void in the traditional leadership of Oyo State. His commitment to peace and progress in his domain will be fondly remembered by his subjects and beyond.
