Ekpa, a former municipal politician in Lahti, was arrested in November 2024 by Finnish authorities on suspicion of terror-related activities. Prosecutors allege that he used various social media platforms to incite violence and unrest, directly contributing to the deteriorating security situation in southeastern Nigeria.

State prosecutor Sampsa Hakala indicated during the preparatory hearing that there is “a great deal of evidence regarding this individual’s online activity and communications,” which forms a significant part of the prosecution’s case. Finnish police have collaborated with Nigerian authorities in their investigation, gathering evidence that prosecutors argue constitutes terrorism under Finnish law.

Beyond the terrorism charges, Ekpa also faces allegations of aggravated tax fraud and violation of the provisions of the Attorneys Act. His lawyer, Kaarle Gummerus, questioned the reliability of information sourced from Nigeria during today’s proceedings and maintained that his client denies all charges.

The trial is expected to last several days, with a panel of three judges presiding over the case. Ekpa has been in pre-trial detention since his arrest.

The timing of the trial, on May 30, has drawn criticism from a faction of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who traditionally commemorate the memory of Biafra war martyrs on this date. The BRGIE, the group Ekpa claims to lead, had also called for a two-day lockdown in Nigeria’s South-east region to honor his court appearance.

This trial marks a significant development in the efforts to address the widespread insecurity attributed to separatist activities in Nigeria’s South-east, with international cooperation playing a crucial role in bringing these allegations to a judicial process.
