Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has expressed confidence that the recent wave of defections from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will not destabilize the party, emphasizing its unwavering commitment to the Nigerian populace.
Speaking at the inauguration of the newly elected PDP South West zonal executive members at the party’s zonal secretariat in Ibadan, Governor Makinde reassured party members that the PDP remains resilient and focused on serving the masses. He stated, “We will stay with the people of Nigeria,” highlighting that the 2027 elections will be determined by the needs and aspirations of the citizens, not by political elites.
Governor Makinde also addressed concerns about the party’s internal challenges, asserting that the PDP has strong institutions capable of withstanding external pressures. He pointed out that despite losing power at the federal level in 2015, the PDP has remained a formidable political force, citing its consistent National Executive Committee (NEC) meetings as evidence of its institutional strength.
In a related development, Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, commended the emergence of the new leadership in the South West, describing it as a positive omen for the party in the region. He urged the newly inaugurated executive members to strengthen the party structures at all levels through inclusive practices and to build the party from the grassroots to maintain and expand its electoral base.
The event also featured remarks from the PDP National Vice Chairman (South West), Engr. Kamorudeen Ajisafe, who commended the peaceful and democratic approach of the party during the zonal election. He assured party members of his determination to work with the states’ party chairmen to reconcile and harmonize the party, aiming to win more governorship and legislative seats in the upcoming general elections.
As the 2027 elections approach, Governor Makinde’s statements underscore the PDP’s resolve to remain united and focused on addressing the concerns of the Nigerian people, positioning the party as a credible alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
