Ibadan, Oyo State – The Oyo State Government has announced ambitious plans to transform the Ladoke Akintola International Airport (LAIA) in Ibadan into a world-class facility, with international flight operations slated to commence by 2026. This announcement, made by the State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Dotun Oyelade, on Monday, signals a significant boost to the state’s connectivity and economic prospects.
Speaking in Ibadan, the state capital, Oyelade detailed the ongoing extensive upgrade works at the airport. Key improvements include a substantial extension of the runway from 2,400 meters to 3,000 meters and its widening from 45 to 60 meters. These enhancements are crucial to accommodate wide-body aircraft, essential for international flights.
Furthermore, the airfield lighting system is being upgraded to CAT C standards, ensuring enhanced safety and operational capabilities, particularly in low visibility conditions. The airport’s fire-fighting response capabilities are also being significantly bolstered to meet stringent international safety regulations.
The Commissioner also highlighted the establishment of essential facilities for Customs, Immigration, and other crucial agencies necessary for seamless international travel protocols.
According to Oyelade, the upgrade of the runway, apron, taxiway, and blast pads is progressing steadily and has reached 55% completion. The state government anticipates that these critical upgrades will be finalized before the end of the current year, paving the way for the resumption of local flight operations, subject to the necessary approvals from relevant regulatory authorities.
Meanwhile, the construction of the new International Terminal is currently at 15% completion and is projected to be ready by June 2026, marking the commencement of international flight operations from LAIA.
“These upgrades reflect the government’s vision of transforming the Ibadan Airport into a modern and internationally competitive facility,” stated Commissioner Oyelade. “By enhancing our infrastructure to accommodate larger aircraft, we are not only improving domestic connectivity but also paving the way for global travel, which will have a significant positive impact on our state’s economy and accessibility.”
This development aligns with Governor Seyi Makinde’s commitment to infrastructure development as a key driver of economic growth in Oyo State. The upgraded airport is expected to attract more investment, facilitate trade, and enhance tourism in the region.
The Commissioner also reiterated Governor Makinde’s promise regarding the next Hajj flight to Saudi Arabia, suggesting that the upgraded facilities might play a role in future pilgrimages.
The news of the airport upgrade has been met with optimism by residents and business owners in Oyo State, who anticipate increased economic activity and easier access to both domestic and international destinations. The completion of this project will position Ibadan as a significant aviation hub in the southwestern region of Nigeria.
