Ibadan, Oyo State – The Oyo State Government has approved ₦4.5 billion in financial support for survivors and victims of the Bodija explosion that occurred on January 16, 2024. This decision, made at a recent Executive Council meeting, supplements the over ₦200 million already spent by the government on accommodation, feeding, hospital bills, and security following the tragic incident.

In addition to the financial aid, the council has approved the recommendation to revoke the title of two properties off Adeyi Avenue, the site of the explosion. This action is deemed to be in the overall public interest, and the government plans to build a monument on the location to honor the victims of the tragedy.

The Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, stated that the government will also facilitate the return of adjoining properties to their owners for reconstruction, based on the advice of government-paid structural engineers. He also addressed the disinformation circulating, calling it unfair and mischievous, and assured that the government is committed to doing what is just for its citizens.

The government, through the Ministry of Justice, will ensure the effective prosecution of suspects already arraigned in court. Efforts are also being intensified to apprehend other suspects linked to the case who are currently at large.
The explosion, triggered by a water gel-type explosive at a residence rented by a Malian national involved in mining, resulted in at least five fatalities and numerous injuries.

While the government has shown support to the victims, some residents have expressed concerns about the delay in the disbursement of funds, even after the 10-member committee submitted its report. They urge the government to act with urgency to alleviate their suffering.
