Captain Ibrahim Traoré, the leader of Burkina Faso, has revealed a shocking betrayal within his closest circle: a trusted soldier, once considered as close as an elite guard, orchestrated three assassination attempts against him in exchange for a staggering 5 billion CFA francs (approximately $8 million USD). This revelation underscores the immense challenges faced by African leaders striving to protect their nations from both internal and external threats.

Details of the Betrayal and Assassination Attempts

The plot against Captain Traoré was uncovered following a series of events culminating on November 8, 2024, when an individual was arrested in Ouagadougou while handing over 5 billion CFA francs to soldiers allegedly involved in the conspiracy to destabilize the government. The soldiers, however, remained loyal and reported the scheme to their superiors, leading to the arrest of the conspirators and the seizure of the funds.

Further investigations revealed that the assassination attempts were sophisticated and well-funded, involving special ammunition designed to penetrate armored protection. The conspirators planned to kill Traoré during public events, including a bombing at his residence on the evening of January 13, 2025, coinciding with the Africa Cup of Nations match, and a backup plan involving an attack on a government motorcade the following day.

Who Was Behind the Plot?

While the identity of the main betrayer remains classified, reports suggest that the plot was linked to powerful foreign interests aiming to destabilize Burkina Faso and the wider Sahel region. Burkina Faso’s rich natural resources, including gold, zinc, lithium, and manganese, make it a strategic target for those seeking to exploit its wealth amid regional insecurity.

There are also indications that relatives of former pro-French leader Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba, who was overthrown by Traoré in 2022, were involved in funding opponents of the current regime. Additionally, foreign arms traced back to France were reportedly smuggled into Burkina Faso through Côte d’Ivoire, implicating regional actors in the destabilization efforts.

The Impact on Trust and Governance

Captain Traoré expressed profound disillusionment, stating, “I’ve lost the ability to trust,” reflecting the emotional and political toll of such deep betrayal. Despite the attempts, Traoré’s loyal guards refused to betray him, even after being offered millions of dollars and lethal ammunition. Their decision to expose the plot rather than participate in it was hailed as a rare act of loyalty and patriotism, highlighting the fragile but vital trust that sustains leadership in volatile environments.

The foiled coup and assassination attempts have intensified calls within Burkina Faso for transparency, justice, and stronger national unity against both internal treachery and foreign interference. The government is reportedly seeking to strengthen its security apparatus, including increasing support from allied forces such as the Russian “African Corps,” to counter ongoing jihadist threats and political instability.

Broader Context: The Perilous Path of African Leadership

Burkina Faso’s current leadership embraces “Sankarism,” inspired by the socialist and anti-colonial ideals of former president Thomas Sankara, aiming for true independence and socio-economic reform. However, these ideals face fierce opposition from entrenched pro-French elites and international actors with vested interests in the region’s resources and geopolitical alignment.

The recent revelations illustrate the high stakes and dangers African revolutionaries face in their quest to safeguard their people and sovereignty. The intricate web of betrayal, foreign influence, and internal dissent poses a formidable challenge to genuine leadership and raises the poignant question: can an African leader ever truly trust again?

This episode serves as a stark reminder of the complex and often perilous dynamics shaping governance in Burkina Faso and the Sahel, where loyalty is tested by vast sums of money, foreign agendas, and the relentless struggle for power and national integrity.
