Abuja, Nigeria – The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has expressed deep concern over the increasing trend of recirculating old videos on social media platforms with the intention of maligning the Force and undermining national security. In a press statement released today, the police reiterated previous warnings against such mischievous acts designed to portray the NPF negatively.
The Force emphasized that this practice of reposting outdated videos, which present a negative image of the current police force and spread falsehoods, poses a significant threat to internal security, especially at a time when the NPF is actively working to build public trust and confidence.
The statement specifically addressed two recent instances of recirculated videos. The first involved a video, originally surfacing several years ago, depicting a Police Mobile Force (PMF) officer lamenting alleged poor conditions faced by officers deployed to Yobe State. The Force clarified that the issues raised in the video were addressed administratively when it first emerged, and the current recirculation is a deliberate attempt to discredit the institution and incite panic among Nigerians.
The second case involved an old video allegedly featuring an officer from the Counter Terrorism Unit claiming that banditry is politically motivated, and that the government is endangering officers by deploying them to the front lines without adequate ammunition, hindering effective combat against bandits. The NPF stated that this matter was thoroughly investigated at the time, and the allegations were found to be false, leading to disciplinary actions against the officers involved for raising a false alarm. The Force firmly refuted the content of this video, asserting that it does not reflect the present realities within the Police Force.
The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM., strongly cautioned the public to be wary of the deliberate spread of falsehoods intended to create tension and ridicule the police institution. He warned those engaging in such acts to cease immediately, as it erodes public confidence in national security institutions.
Furthermore, the IGP assured the public that the police leadership is actively taking steps to improve the welfare of officers and enhance the operational efficiency of the Nigeria Police Force, contrary to the false narratives presented in the recirculated old videos.
