Veteran Journalist and Former NUJ Scribe Pa Jola Ogunlusi Passes at 91

The Nigerian media and community development sectors mourn the loss of Pa Jola Ogunlusi, former National Secretary of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), who died on Saturday, April 19, 2025, at 9:54 a.m. following a brief illness.Aged 91, Ogunlusi’s death marks the end of an era for a man celebrated for his unwavering dedication to journalism, equity, and grassroots progress.

Ogunlusi’s career in journalism began in the early 1970s, a period marked by Nigeria’s post-independence media evolution. His commitment to ethical reporting and advocacy for press freedom saw him rise to the position of NUJ National Secretary, where he became renowned for fostering unity and fairness within the profession.Colleagues and family members described him as an “epitome of dedication, loyalty, and singular commitment to justice,” traits that defined his decades-long service. His leadership during this period laid groundwork for modern journalistic standards in Nigeria, emphasizing integrity and accountability.

Beyond journalism, Ogunlusi’s legacy is deeply rooted in community development. As President of the FESTAC Town Residents Association, he spearheaded efforts that culminated in the creation of the Amuwo Odofin Local Council Development Area (LCDA) in Lagos. His advocacy addressed critical infrastructure and governance gaps, transforming the region into a model for grassroots governance. Later, as Chairman of the Community Development Council in Amuwo Odofin, he championed initiatives that improved education, healthcare, and civic engagement, earning him the affectionate moniker “Papa Jola”.

Family tributes highlighted his role as a patriarch who balanced professional rigor with compassion. A statement signed by broadcaster Gbenga Aruleba noted Ogunlusi’s “legacy of love, wisdom, and kindness,” which extended beyond his immediate family to colleagues, acquaintances, and communities. His daughter recalled his insistence on “lifting others as he climbed,” a philosophy reflected in his mentorship of young journalists and activists.

The Lagos NUJ chapter lamented his passing as a “blow to journalism,” with Chairman Adeleye Ajayi praising Ogunlusi’s versatility and describing him as a “pioneer whose landmarks remain indelible”. Tributes also poured in from media veterans, including Kayode Fasua of Owena Press Limited, who remembered Ogunlusi’s camaraderie with his late father and their shared commitment to ethical reporting.

While burial arrangements are pending, the family has requested prayers and support during this period of grief. Ogunlusi’s life, spanning nearly a century, stands as a testament to the power of service—a narrative that intertwines Nigeria’s journalistic history with its community development aspirations. His passing leaves a void, but his ideals of equity, justice, and compassion continue to inspire a new generation.
