Ibadan,Oyo State – The University of Ibadan (UI) has issued a stark warning to its female students regarding the increasing and potentially dangerous trend of engaging in egg donation as a means of income generation. While acknowledging egg donation’s role in assisting families facing infertility, the University Health Service has firmly stated that it is not a reliable or safe “side hustle” for students.
The university’s concern, highlighted in a memo dated April 15th by the Director of the University Health Service, Dr. Aderonke Ajayi, comes amidst growing financial pressures on students navigating the rising cost of living. Egg donation, often promising significant financial rewards, can appear to be an appealing solution for students seeking to supplement their income.
However, UI health officials are emphasizing the serious health risks associated with the procedure. These risks, stemming from the hormonal medications used to stimulate the ovaries, include common side effects such as abdominal pain, breast tenderness, bloating, and mood swings. More alarmingly, egg donation can lead to Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS), infections, bleeding, ovarian torsion, and potential damage to internal organs like the bladder and bowel.
Beyond the physical dangers, the university also cautioned against underestimating the potential psychological distress that can accompany the procedure.
Dr. Ajayi stressed the critical need for students to prioritize their health above financial incentives. “It is crucial that our students understand the health implications and long-term consequences of egg donation,” she stated.
While advising students to exercise extreme caution, the university also urged those considering egg donation to choose reputable clinics that strictly adhere to medical guidelines and prioritize donor safety.
