The Oyo State Government has reopened the psychiatric unit of the Ring Road State Hospital, Adeoyo, after being closed for several months.
Speaking on Friday, Dr. Akin Fagbemi, Chairman of the Oyo State Hospitals’ Management Board, stated that the psychiatric unit is strategically designed to accommodate the specialized needs of mental health patients.
He emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring that the unit’s activities align with international best practices for psychiatric rehabilitation centers.
Dr. Fagbemi urged residents to regularly check their mental health status to avoid mental illnesses or depression. He also called on the public to visit the Ring Road State Hospital for mental health assessments, as it is the only facility in the state with a psychiatric unit.
Dr. Shina Fakunle, Consultant Psychiatrist at the Ring Road State Hospital, highlighted the importance of mental health within the health sector, stressing that it must be treated with the utmost priority.
He advised the youth in the state to avoid drug abuse and other vices, noting that a majority of the hospital’s patients are victims of these issues.
The Oyo State Hospitals’ Management Board (OYSHMB) has also introduced new aprons for senior nurses and scrubs for other nurses in the state health sector to enhance recognition. Dr. Fagbemi described this initiative as the beginning of a new era for secondary healthcare in the state.
Dr. Fagbemi commended Governor Oluseyi Makinde for his continuous efforts in the health sector, including the recruitment of health workers, approval of uniform allowances for nurses, timely salary payments, and the payment of a 13th-month bonus to all state workers. He applauded the governor for providing quality healthcare services to the people of Oyo State.
Dr. Anifat Ibraheem, Permanent Secretary of the board, praised the state government’s unwavering support for providing basic healthcare services under Omi-Tuntun 2.0 for the people of the state.
