According to Zelenskyy, Ukrainian forces encountered six Chinese soldiers, resulting in the capture of two. He stated that Ukrainian authorities possess documentation, bank cards, and personal data of the prisoners.
“Our military captured two Chinese citizens who fought in the Russian army. This happened on the territory of Ukraine, in the Donetsk region,” Zelenskyy stated in a Telegram post. He further claimed that intelligence suggests a larger number of Chinese nationals are serving within Russian military units. “We have information that there are many more Chinese citizens in the occupier’s units than just two. We are now finding out all the facts.”
Zelenskyy has instructed Ukraine’s Foreign Minister to initiate contact with Beijing, seeking clarification on the presence of Chinese citizens in the conflict. He emphasized the gravity of Russia’s alleged recruitment of Chinese nationals, characterizing it as a sign of Moscow’s intent to prolong the war.
“Russia’s involvement of China in this war in Europe, directly or indirectly, is a clear signal that Putin is going to do anything but end the war. He is looking for ways to continue the war. This definitely requires a reaction. A reaction from the United States, Europe, and everyone in the world who wants peace,” he said.
The captured individuals are currently in the custody of Ukraine’s Security Service, which is conducting investigative and operational procedures. The situation has prompted calls for international response, particularly from the US and European nations.
