The Minister of Education, Dr. Olatunji Alausa, has unveiled plans to establish a Teachers’ Corps program that would deploy National Certificate of Education (NCE) graduates to rural areas on two-year contracts through the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme.
The initiative aims to tackle Nigeria’s growing teacher shortage while simultaneously creating employment opportunities for NCE graduates across the country.
Dr. Alausa announced the proposal during a courtesy visit by Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, Director General of the National Youth Service Corps, to the Ministry’s headquarters in Abuja.
“This program would serve a dual purpose of providing meaningful employment for our NCE graduates while addressing the critical teacher shortage in our rural communities,” said Dr. Alausa during the meeting.
The proposed Teachers’ Corps would integrate with the existing NYSC framework, leveraging its nationwide deployment infrastructure to place qualified educators in underserved areas where they are most needed.

While specific implementation details are still forthcoming, the initiative represents a significant potential collaboration between the Ministry of Education and the NYSC to strengthen Nigeria’s educational system, particularly in rural communities.
