A 62-year-old California grandmother, Stephanie Dowells, was tragically strangled to death during an overnight “conjugal visit” with her husband, David Brinson, at Mule Creek State Prison in Northern California. Brinson, 54, is a convicted murderer serving four consecutive life sentences without parole for killing four men in 1993.
In November, Brinson reported to prison officials that his wife had passed out during their visit. However, the Amador County Coroner later determined her death was a homicide caused by strangulation. Despite this, no charges have been filed as the investigation remains ongoing.
The incident has raised questions about the supervision of such visits, given Brinson’s violent history. Family visits at the prison occur in private facilities and are intended to foster positive family connections and rehabilitation. Dowells’ family is seeking answers, expressing concern over how such a violent incident could occur during an unsupervised visit.
