Gunmen suspected to be bandits have reportedly kidnapped and killed Rev. Fr. Sylvester Okechukwu, the parish priest of St. Mary Catholic Church, Tachira, in Kaura Local Government Area of Kaduna State. The tragic incident occurred on the night of Tuesday, March 4, 2025, when the priest was abducted from his residence around 9:15 PM. He was brutally murdered by his captors in the early hours of Wednesday, March 5.
Rev. Fr. Jacob Shanet, Chancellor of the Catholic Diocese of Kafanchan, confirmed the killing in a statement, describing it as a devastating loss. “Fr. Sylvester was a dedicated servant of God who worked selflessly in spreading peace, love, and hope,” he said. The diocese urged calm among the community and called for prayers for the repose of his soul.

Born in December 1980 and ordained on February 11, 2021, Fr. Okechukwu was known for his accessibility and commitment to his parishioners. Funeral arrangements will be announced later. The diocese has asked all faithful to offer prayers and Masses for him while urging restraint and unity during this difficult time.
