The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) would on Thursday, February 27, 2025, at the Prof. Oluwafemi Balogun Ceremonial Building, by 10:00 a.m. hold a Commendation Service in honour of the late Prof. Oladipo Ademuyiwa, a distinguished scholar from the Department of Biochemistry, College of Biosciences (COLBIOS).

This was contained in a statement made available by Olasunkanmi Olajide, the Acting Director of Public Relations of the University.

ValidViewNetwork had earlier reported that the erudite scholar and community leader was killed by a hit-and-run driver throwing his family, community and the University where he worked into agony.

ValidViewNetwork reports that the unfortunate incident, which occurred on Sunday, February 16, 2025, has brought to the fore again the series of avoidable deaths in the country with the community reiterating a call for immediate government intervention to prevent further tragedies on the road where the accident occurred.

The community lamented : “It is disheartening that despite repeated appeals to the Ogun State Government and relevant agencies, no concrete action has been taken to install speed breakers and other necessary safety measures on this road.

“The government did not hesitate in installing speed bumps on the Ilugun end of the Road, but ignored our persistent requests to safeguard lives in Ajebo Road Housing Estate.

“We demand the following immediate actions from the Ogun State Government:

  1. Installation of speed breakers along Prof Wole Soyinka Road without further delay.
  2. Installation of Lorry Barrier
  3. Clear traffic signage to caution motorists against reckless driving.
  4. Stricter law enforcement to curb excessive speeding within the estate.

“It is unacceptable that a community of law-abiding citizens must suffer repeated accidents, near-fatal encounters, and now the loss of an esteemed professor, simply due to government inaction.

“Another accident occurred within 24 hours of this tragic incident, proving that this road remains a death trap.

“However, we hold the government accountable and call on the Governor of Ogun State to intervene immediately before more lives are lost.

“We also appeal to the media, civil society organizations, and well-meaning Nigerians to amplify this call for justice and safer roads in our community.”

The Commendation Service would provide an opportunity for colleagues, students, family, and friends to pay tribute to the late Professor.

A renowned expert in Biochemical Toxicology, Prof. Ademuyiwa was widely respected for his groundbreaking contributions to Biochemistry and his unwavering commitment to academic excellence. Throughout his career, he received several prestigious awards, including, the Obafemi Awolowo University Postgraduate Fellowship Award (1987/1988); the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) Scholarship Award (April 1991 – May 1995); German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) Fellowship Award (April 2003 – June 2003), and the CSIR-TWAS Postdoctoral Fellowship Award (August 2006 – July 2007), among many others.

His passing is a profound loss to FUNAAB and the academic community, but his legacy of excellence and dedication would continue to inspire generations to come, the statement read.
