FOSTERING HOPE : 2024 Indigent Student Tuition Intervention Project by FUNAAB Alumni USA

The 2024 edition of the USA branch of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) Alumni Association marked a significant milestone, further strengthening the bond between the university community and the wider alumni network. This year’s fundraising campaign showcased the unwavering commitment and unity of the USA branch, surpassing expectations with remarkable results.

Fundraising Success and Unity

The target for the 2024 fundraising drive was set at $7,000(equivalent of about N11m), a goal which was fully met by the dedication and generosity of the USA branch members within an impressive four-week period. This achievement is not only a testament to the commitment of the branch to support indigent students but also a clear demonstration of the strong spirit of community and solidarity that thrives among members. According to Mrs. Funmi Fashola, the current Chairlady of the USA branch, “This is a demonstration of love and unity that exist among members of the USA branch and the love they have for students and their alma mater. It is a testament of teamwork and sheer camaraderie.” A total of 108 students benefited from this year’s edition.

Historical Perspective and Continued Growth

The Indigent Student Tuition Intervention Project was initiated under the leadership of Dr. Sunday Peters. The project began in 2020 with an initial total contribution of N2 million. The following year, in 2021, the branch raised N4.5 million, further establishing the importance and impact of the project. However, in 2022, the project was put on hold due to the closure of the university caused by a 9-month strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). Despite this interruption, the commitment of the branch remained steadfast.

In 2023, the USA branch resumed its efforts and raised an impressive N7.65 million. Under the leadership of the current Chairlady, Mrs. Funmi Fashola, the branch set a new record by raising N11 million in 2024. This remarkable achievement underscores the branch’s resolve to support students amid the rising economic challenges and increasing tuition costs. Mrs. Fashola’s leadership and the collective effort of the USA branch have set a benchmark unmatched by any other branch of the alumni association.

Screening Committee Efforts

A critical part of the project’s success was the diligent work of the screening committee, which included Mr. Bayo Okenla, the Welfare Officer of the USA branch, and Lt. Aduragbemi Ogundipe, the Vice Chairman of the USA branch. According to their report, the committee reviewed applications from over 400 students of which 108 students were qualified. The process revealed the significant struggles and hardships students endure in pursuing their education at the university. Mr. Bayo Okenla and Lt. Aduragbemi Ogundipe highlighted in their report that the Indigent Student Tuition Intervention Project remains a beacon of hope for those who are most in need, providing essential support to help them continue their academic journeys.

The committee’s dedication to ensuring a thorough and fair selection process underscored the commitment of the USA branch to reach the most deserving students and make a genuine difference in their lives.

Tribute to Dedication and Legacy

Throughout the fundraising and subsequent processes of fund transfer, student screening, and eventual disbursement, the executive members fondly remembered the late Dr. Folasade Akinde, whose dedication and contributions to the Alumni Association were unparalleled. Dr. Folasade Akinde’s legacy of selflessness and investment in the project has left an indelible mark. Her absence continues to be felt deeply, as her commitment was instrumental in ensuring the smooth delivery of the project’s objectives. The USA branch’s establishment of a dedicated fund for Dr. Folasade Akinde’s daughter in 2024 serves as a poignant reminder of her impact and the high regard in which she is held.
