Men’s Mental Health Matters Too: Eye Health TV CEO on Emotional Well-being

Daniel Anthony, Chief Executive Officer of Eye Health Television and founder of Nigeria’s first health-focused television station, along with being a member of Vision Advocates United Kingdom, has emphasized the importance for men to prioritize their health as diligently as they prioritize their family’s well-being.

Anthony highlighted that men frequently neglect seeking medical attention due to reasons such as busyness, believing illnesses will resolve on their own, or feeling reluctant to speak up about health concerns.

Anthony underscored that studies indicate women are significantly more likely than men to undergo annual exams and preventive health services.

He pointed out that men afflicted with conditions like blindness, glaucoma, or cataracts may struggle to fulfill their roles fully, placing additional responsibilities on their wives and potentially affecting their children’s upbringing negatively.

The societal stigma surrounding men’s health can lead to severe consequences, contributing to higher rates of conditions such as eye blindness, prostate cancer, testicular cancer, heart disease, and mental health disorders among men.

Anthony highlighted lifestyle factors such as tobacco use, excessive alcohol consumption, poor diet, and lack of physical activity as further exacerbating men’s health risks.

In his Father’s Day message, Anthony stressed the importance of acknowledging these challenges and taking proactive steps through annual check-ups, screenings, and adopting healthier lifestyles.

He encouraged men diagnosed with eye ailments like cataracts and glaucoma to consult doctors promptly and consider surgery when necessary, as it often provides the most effective solution.

Anthony advocated for fostering partnerships with trusted healthcare professionals to facilitate ongoing communication and regular health assessments.

This approach, he noted, enables early identification of potential health issues, leading to more effective treatment options and better outcomes.

He emphasized that many health conditions, including eye defects, cataracts, glaucoma, prostate cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and mental health disorders, can be effectively managed or prevented with timely intervention.

Regarding Vision Advocates United Kingdom, Anthony mentioned the organization’s commitment to improving eye health in Nigeria, having organized numerous free surgeries for Nigerians suffering from cataracts and other eye diseases.

To promote healthier lifestyles among men, Anthony recommended regular exercise, maintaining a balanced diet, dispelling fears about eye surgery, and managing stress levels effectively.
