The Lagos State government has raised concerns about the potential dangers to the climate if youths do not embrace climate change education, essential for ensuring a sustainable future for the planet.
Through the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, the government emphasized the critical role of young people in safeguarding the future.
“The future of our planet rests in the hands of the youth, and equipping them with the knowledge and tools to understand and address climate change is paramount,” a statement from the ministry read.
To address climate change issues, the government, in partnership with the Public Service Staff Development Centre (PSSDC) and other collaborators, launched the Eco-learn Nigeria project.

At the project’s launch in Lagos on Friday, the Director-General of PSSDC, represented by Mr. Olushola Kolawole, highlighted the essential role of youth in achieving a sustainable future.
According to him, the initiative aims to provide public service teachers with the resources and expertise needed to integrate climate change education into the school curriculum.
Kolawole reiterated, “The future of our planet rests in the hands of the youth, and equipping them with the knowledge and tools to understand and address climate change is paramount.”
Mr. Michael Bankole, Director of Climate Change in the Ministry of Environment, expressed satisfaction with Lagos State’s proactive stance on climate change education. He praised the state’s dedication to training children on climate change, hygiene, and sanitation.
Dr. Rita Kienka, representative of the Tutor-General/Permanent Secretary of Education District III, described the initiative as a significant milestone. She emphasized that preparing future generations to tackle climate change challenges by empowering teachers is crucial for paving the way towards a more sustainable future for the planet.
