The Organised Labour has presented a fresh proposal to the Federal Government, suggesting a minimum wage of N497,000.
Meanwhile, the Federal Government and the Organised Private Sector (OPS) have jointly proposed a sum of N57,000 as the new minimum wage.
An informed source at the recently concluded tripartite committee meeting on minimum wage disclosed this development in an interview with our correspondent.
The source stated, “Labour has now made a fresh proposal of N497,000; the Federal Government and OPS have jointly proposed N57,000.”
On January 30, 2024, President Bola Tinubu, through Vice President Kashim Shettima, inaugurated the 37-member Tripartite Committee on Minimum Wage.
The committee’s task is to establish a new minimum wage before the current N30,000 wage expires on April 18.
The panel comprises representatives from federal and state governments, the private sector, and organised labour, and is expected to recommend a new national minimum wage for the country.

During the panel’s inauguration, Shettima urged the members to “speedily” reach a resolution and submit their reports early. “This timely submission is crucial to ensure the emergence of a new minimum wage,” Shettima emphasized.
To further its mandate, the committee held a zonal public hearing simultaneously on March 7 in Lagos, Kano, Enugu, Akwa Ibom, Adamawa, and Abuja.
At these hearings, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) in various states proposed different figures as a living wage, citing the current economic challenges and high cost of living.
In their proposals, NLC members in the South-West states demanded N794,000, while the TUC suggested N447,000.
In the North-Central zonal hearing in Abuja, workers demanded N709,000 as the new national minimum wage.
In the South-South, the proposed figure was N850,000, whereas the North-West suggested N485,000, and the South-East stakeholders demanded N540,000.
Ultimately, organised labour has settled on N615,000 as a living wage.
