The United Kingdom edition of Reader’s Digest is closing its doors after operating for 86 years.
Eva Mackevic, the magazine’s Editor-in-Chief, broke the news on LinkedIn on Monday, citing financial struggles. Founded in 1922 in the US by DeWitt Wallace and Lila Wallace, Reader’s Digest UK faced insurmountable challenges in today’s magazine publishing landscape.
Mackevic expressed her sadness over the closure, acknowledging the privilege of contributing to the iconic publication for nearly eight years and leading its team for six.

She thanked colleagues, writers, PRs, and brands for their dedication and collaboration over the years.
Addressing concerns about outstanding payments to writers, Mackevic assured that insolvency practitioners are working to communicate the next steps promptly.
Throughout its history, Reader’s Digest made significant contributions, including impactful campaigns like raising awareness about the health risks of tobacco use in 1924.
The magazine also had a notable association with the British monarchy, receiving recognition from Queen Elizabeth II, including a commissioned portrait for her 60th birthday.
