The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ola Olukoyede on Tuesday at the EFCC Headquarters in Jabi, Abuja, shared an alarming incident involving a 17-year-old hacker who infiltrated his personal computer and bank account while being interrogated at his Lagos office.
Olukoyede recounted how the teenager, who is studying History and Anthropology and not engaged in science-related studies, effortlessly accessed sensitive information including Olukoyede’s BVN and bank account details.
Despite not disclosing any information, the hacker was able to retrieve Olukoyede’s account details through his phone number.
Expressing concern over the prevalence of such cybercrimes among young individuals, Olukoyede emphasized the need for preventive measures to deter them, highlighting the potential consequences including imprisonment or worse.
In response to such incidents, Olukoyede stated that the EFCC aims to reform young offenders through light sentences and rehabilitation programs.

He expressed reluctance to impose severe punishments on youths, acknowledging the detrimental impact on their future.
Despite the hacker’s proficiency, Olukoyede refused his offer to demonstrate transferring funds, cautioning against illegal activities in his presence.
The hacker cited financial struggles within his family, with his parents unable to work due to security concerns, and assumed responsibility for supporting his siblings’ education.
Moved by the teenager’s circumstances, Olukoyede pledged to support his education if he ceased criminal activities.
Additionally, he sought assistance from friends to sponsor the education of the hacker’s siblings.
This incident aligns with the EFCC’s strategy to rehabilitate convicted cybercriminals and prevent youth involvement in such crimes, as emphasized by Olukoyede during previous engagements with student associations.
Through initiatives aimed at dissuading young individuals from cybercrime, the EFCC seeks to protect their futures and deter them from engaging in illegal activities.
