The passing of Godwin Opara, popularly known as Kabaka, marks the end of an era in the realm of highlife music. At the age of 77, Kabaka’s death comes just six months after his triumphant return to the music scene with the release of his acclaimed “Abialam” album in September 2023.
As a pioneering figure in highlife music, Kabaka was not only a gifted artist but also a renowned songwriter and guitarist whose melodies deeply resonated with fans across Africa and beyond.
He co-established The Oriental Brothers International Band in 1973, leaving an indelible mark with socially conscious lyrics, musical prowess, and an authentic sound that captivated audiences.

Transitioning to a solo career in 1976 with The Kabaka International Guitar Band, Kabaka continued to produce high-quality highlife music, releasing fourteen albums and producing hits like ‘Mangala Special’.
His exploration of Ezebongo rhythms showcased his versatility and creativity, further solidifying his status as a luminary in the genre.
Kabaka’s comeback in 2023 with “The Return of Kabaka” album was met with widespread acclaim, garnering over a million streams and securing a place among the top 100 albums worldwide.
His legacy as a trailblazer in highlife music will endure, leaving an indelible mark on the genre and inspiring future generations of musicians.
