Labour Party Braces for Showdown as NWC and NLC Engage in War

The leadership crisis within the Labour Party has escalated with accusations flying between the National Working Committee (NWC) and the National President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero.

The NWC has accused Ajaero of attempting to replace the National Chairman of the party, Julius Abure, while Ajaero’s camp has criticized Abure and the NWC for planning a ‘secret’ national convention without proper stakeholder input.

The NLC’s Political Commission alleged that Abure and the NWC planned to hold a convention in Umuahia, Abia State, on March 27 to re-elect Abure as the party’s National Chairman.

They deemed this plan illegal and called for Abure’s resignation.

In response, the Labour Party’s leadership condemned the NLC’s directive, accusing Ajaero of orchestrating the move to further his own ambition to become the party’s national chairman.

The LP asserted that the planned convention would proceed as scheduled and dismissed the NLC’s demands.

The LP further criticized the NLC’s involvement in party politics, urging Ajaero to resign from his position and officially join the race for the party’s chairmanship if he desires.

They emphasized the importance of grassroots politicking and questioned the commitment of NLC members to the Labour Party, noting that many are not even card-carrying members.
