Caleb University Imota, Lagos, has announced the appointment of Prof. Sunday Olumuyiwa Adewale as the new Deputy Vice Chancellor (DVC) in charge of Academics.
Prof Adewale made history on 1st October 2016 by emerging *the first Student Union Government (SUG) President to become a Professor in Nigeria , when LAUTECH appointed him a Professor of Applied Mathematics. He extended the record by becoming the first SUG President to become a Deputy Vice Chancellor in Nigeria, upon his appointment as Caleb University’s DVC Academic in 2023.
Globally acclaimed as phenomenal, articulate and enterprising, the new DVC holds a B. Tech. Mathematics; M.Tech. Mathematics as well as Ph.D in Applied Mathematics.
A thorough home-bred, Prof Adewale has attended conferences and workshops in over fifteen countries across four continents. Notable among them is the research paper presentation at Oxford University, United Kingdom in 2015; and a Conference at the National Open University of Singapore in 2012.
The Mathematician, based on his amazing track records both in academic and administrative endeavours, is already supporting Caleb University to transform learning capacity and impact, consolidate collaborative activities across disciplinary boundaries and drive support for academic excellence.
The Vice Chancellor, Prof Nosa Owens- Ibie, is delighted at the strides recorded by Prof Adewale within a short time of joining Caleb University.
Professor Adewale, a devout Christian, brings extensive convening experience from his previous roles as a member of the University Governing Council, as well as vast experience garnered at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology where he became the first Academic to be appointed HoD of two different departments, and distinguished himself in both roles..

Born into the Adewale Family in Ajikobi compound, Alekuso, Ibadan; Ibadan North Local Government Area of Oyo State, Prof. Adewale bagged a Bachelor’s degree, B.Tech(Hons) in Pure and Applied Mathematics, he obtained both a Masters of Technology (M.Tech.) and a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Applied Mathematics in 2003 and 2008 respectively.
A man of fate, Professor Sunday Adewale certainly has leadership bestowed on him right from childhood. It could not have been by accident that he was Timekeeper at primary school: Food Prefect at secondary school; President of the Student Union Government, at LAUTECH; President, (NYSC) Corps Welfare, Nsit Ibom LGA of Akwa Ibom State, among others
Studious, dogged, remarkably intelligent and courageous, Sunday Adewale, who today is a Professor and Deputy Vice Chancellor, began his sojourn originally as an Administrative Officer, Student Affairs Unit at LAUTECH between 2002 and 2004.
He was at the University of Manitoba, Canada, in 2009 where he had his postdoctoral experience. As a Patriiot, he returned ‘home’ to LAUTECH to continue his academic career as Lecturer I in 2010.
He was tasked with several key academic and administrative positions including Staff Adviser: Pure and Applied Mathematics Student Association (2007-2013), as well as Staff Adviser Faculty of Pure and Applied Science Students Association, (2008- 2014); Head of Department, Pure and Applied Mathematics (2014-2017), Investment Secretary, Academic Staff Union of University LAUTECH Branch (2011-2012), Member, Students Disciplinary Committee (2012-2015) and National Vice President, LAUTECH Alumni Association (2008-2010).
Moreover, Prof. Adewale is a recipient of awards including the Federal Government Scholarship Award for Postgraduate Students in 2002, Best Lecturer of Mathematics (2010), Most Approachable and Friendly Lecturer (2011), Honorary Award of Recognition in outstanding performance service to humanity and Landmark contributions towards the development and uplift of LAUTECH and Nigerian Students at large (2012). He is an External Examiner to a number of Universities.
Prof. Sunday Adewale is a member of numerous professional bodies, including the Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics, USA; National Association of Mathematical Physics, Nigerian Mathematical Society and Mathematical Association of Nigeria.
Friendly but firm, unassuming but remarkable, liberal but principled, Prof. Adewale, who has participated in several conferences and workshops locally and globally, has about fifty (50) publications to his credit; successfully supervised Seven (7) Ph.D. students, fifteen (15) Masters degree students.
Dr Sunday Adewale was promoted to the rank of Professor of Mathematics, with effect from October 1, 2016, an elevation that was accompanied with his appointment as the Dean of Student Affairs, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology.
His other senior appointments include Chairman Board of Survey, Acting Chairman, Board of Pre-degree Science, member of the Visitation Panel and Member of Governing Council of Caleb University 2019 and 2021 respectively.
He succeeded the Professor of Architecture, Prof Adedeji Daramola, who has successfully completed his two terms in office.
