A Legacy Of A Clean, Habitable And Safe Environment Is Critical- FUNAAB Don

Professor Kayode Gbekeloluwa Bamgbose (KGB), a Professor of Analytical/Environmental Chemistry from the Department of Environmental Management and Toxicology (EMT), College of Environmental Resources Management (COLERM) has delivered the 84th Inaugural Lecture of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) leaving a bundle of suggestions on ways to salvage the planet earth.

The Lecture titled, “In the Footprints of the Environment, Every Contact Leaves a Trace on our Common Future,” was held is at the Professor Oluwafemi Balogun Ceremonial Building of the University on Wednesday,

According to a statement made available by Olasunkanmi Olajide, Acting Head, Directorate of Public Relations of the University, Prof Bamgbose called for a concerted effort in the fight for a healthier environment .

” Prof Bamgbose recommended increased governmental funding for universities to sustain ongoing research on identifying and mitigating human impacts on the environment.

The statement partly read, “Bamgbose proposed utilising the existing geopolitical zones as laboratory complexes with state-of-the-art equipment to fulfill the mandate of monitoring and understanding these impacts comprehensively.

“He asserted that ignorance about the negative impacts of the destruction of the environment could be overcome through education, calling for a concerted effort to enlighten the populace on the importance of responsible environmental behavior.

“Prof. Bamgbose highlighted the economic implications, attributing the escalating cost of living to the high fuel prices, which in turn contribute to deforestation and increased environmental damage.

“He urged the government to prioritise improving the economy and delivering the positive dividends of democracy to citizens.

“The renowned expert in Environmental and Analytical Chemistry said the exponential rise in population, has led to the heightened energy, food, and material consumption, signifying a significant surge in human impact on the environment.

“Prof. Bamgbose stressed the critical need to preserve a healthy environment, stressing that this responsibility extends beyond personal interest to encompass future generations while advocating for a legacy of a clean, habitable, and safe environment for the global community”.

Earlier, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Babatunde Kehinde, noted that the lecture marked the second in the department’s history and the twelfth in the College of Environmental Resources Management while descrbing Bamgbose as a stalwart who stands by whatever cause he belived in.

Born on 19^th February 1957 into the family of Mr. Ayorinde Bamgbose now Emeritus Prof. Ayo Bamgbose and Late Ayinke Oladunni of blessed memory in Ibadan, Oyo State, KGB as he is fondly called had his early education at Luba Primary School after which he proceeded to Government College Ibadan from 1970-1974 for his secondary school education. He got admitted into the University of Ibadan in 1976 and graduated in 1979 with a B.Sc (Hons) degree in Chemistry. Thereafter, he had his NYSC at Government Girls Secondary School, Talata Mafara, Sokoto State till 1980.  In 1981, he completed a Master’s degree in Analytical chemistry after which he worked briefly as a classroom teacher till 1983 at Ijebu-Ode Muslim College, Ijebu Ode before going for his PhD which he completed in February 1988. 

Professor Kayode Gbekeloluwa Bamgbose, a former Zonal coordinator ASUU Ibadan Zone (2004-2009) and former Chairman ASUU-UNAAB 1(1997-2001) has traversed other tertiary institutions leaving traces of his indelible impact , ValidViewNetwork reports.

The Inaugural Lecture, a reflection of his multidimensional knowledge, has been widely described as a clear demonstration of a lecture by a Teacher of Teachers.
