A 400-level student in the Department of Petrochemical Engineering of the University of Port Harcourt, (UNIPORT), Damian Okoligwe, has been arrested over the alleged murder of his girlfriend, Otuene Justina Nkang.
The 20 year-old deceased was a 300-level student of Biochemistry at the same university. Justina who was declared missing four days ago, was a said to have visited Okoligwe.
The culprit who said to be a skit maker and popularly known as Ai Damian on Facebook was arrested by the police.
In videos seen on social media showed the suspected killer in police handcuffs.
Justina was said to be undergoing her industrial training (IT) attachment at a private hospital in Port Harcourt, where she was last seen.
Her mutilated remains was discovered in her boyfriend’s apartment after a neighbour alerted the police following a foul smell perceived from his residence.
Commissioner of Police Nwonyi Emeka, who paraded the suspect, said an unidentified neighbour of the suspect called the attention of the police when he observed a foul smell oozing from the suspect’s apartment.
On arrival, the door was forced open and the dismembered remains of Justina were discovered in a Ghana-must-go bag.
Speaking to the press Damian claimed to have been unaware of his girlfriend’s death saying, “I slept in the parlour while she slept in the room and when I woke up I found her dead.”
When pressed on why he failed to report to the authorities, he claimed to have been scared of being arrested for her death.
A family source said the boy demanded the money two days before the news of her death, suggesting that he had already killed her before asking for the ransom.
He said the girl’s mom was contacted by the suspect to pay the said sum for the release of her daughter.
According to him, the mom was yet to receive the news of her daughter’s demise as her phone has been collected from her to prevent her from getting the information online.
