Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof Mahmood Yakubu has declared the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Ahmed Tinubu as winner of the 2023 presidential election.
The announcement was made by the INEC chairman on Wednesday in Abuja at the National Collation Center.
Tinubu prevailed over the other 17 candidates that ran for office. He received the highest number of votes (8,794,726) overall, which satisfied the first constitutional condition to be proclaimed the winner.
Moreover, he received more votes than the constitutionally required 25% in 30 states, as opposed to the required 25 states.
INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu, who announced the final results in the early hours of Wednesday in Abuja, said Atiku Abubakar of the PDP came second in the election.
Atiku polled a total of 6,984,520 votes in the election.
With a total of 6,101,533 votes, Peter Obi of the Labour Party came in third, and Rabiu Kwankwaso of the NNPP came in fourth with 1,496,687 votes.
The presidential election was won in at least one state by only the top four contenders. While Mr. Kwankwaso only won in Kano, Messrs. Tinubu, Atiku, and Obi won in 12 states each.
However, winning a majority of states is not a requirement for a candidate to be declared the winner of the election.
